Desmond and Nellie the West African Dwarf Crocodiles joined the White Post family after moving from St Andrews Aquarium in Scotland.
They have settled in extremely well! We are so excited to work with them and we have been getting to know their individual personalities too. They are very different in terms of behaviour and both require different skills and approaches to caring for them.
Desmond is the male and he has been very calm and relaxed since he moved in. Craig from the Exotics team said “He’s been great. He’s quite relaxed but so powerful. I love the sound of his guttural roar, just to let us know who’s boss. Nellie, the female is smaller, but extremely feisty! She gets so excited at feeding time and definitely the more tenacious of the two. They are both eating well and their favourite meals are fish, rodents and crabs! Exotic team members Elle and Katie have been enjoying watching their different reactions to feeding time saying, “Nellie gets extremely excited as soon as she knows it’s dinner time, often running towards her meal. She’s very fast!”.
They get on extremely well and we can already see that they like to spend time together. They have been lying next to each other enjoying time in their favourite basking spot. They have also been swimming together which makes the underwater viewing in the exhibit brilliant for our visitors. Our new crocs could live to well over 75 years and we are so happy that we have been able to give them such a great home.
They will be on display in our new state of the art development, ‘Reptiles of the World’ from Saturday 20th May. We can not wait for you to see them both!
