Sulcata
(Centrochelys sulcata)
Also known as the African spurred tortoise, it’s one of the largest tortoise species in the world. Sulcatas can live between 80 & 100 years, so it’s highly likely that they will outlive their owners Keepers.
When you look at a Sulcata they look very bulky and heavy and that’s because they are, they weigh around 45 – 90kgs with males being heavier and bigger than females, you wouldn’t want one to step on your toe!
Sulcatas can go weeks without food or water, and when it finds a water source it can drink up to 15 percent of its body weight. At the farm they love a treat of aloevera which not only tastes yummy to them but also contains nutrients and water.
Although a Sulcata is a tortoise, they do not hibernate. In cooler months they preferred to be warm and dry – don’t we all!

A WPF Secret
In the hot weather they will dig holes in the soil to bunker down in, as the soil keeps them cool. However watch out for female Sulcatas digging holes to lay their eggs in.

Habitat
Sulcatas love the shrubland and grassland of Africa.
Food and Diet
In their native habitat they eat grasses, flowers, weeds, and cacti, at the farm they enjoy leafy greens, fruit and vegetables.
Size
A mature Sulcata grows up to 50cm – 75cm in length
Population in the World
Their population is thought to be decreasing, with climate change causing a change to their habitat thought to be one of the many contributing factors.
Conservation Status
Listed as endangered on the IUCN redlist.

Our Animal Encounters are a great way to get up-close and personal to your favourite farm animal for an interative 30 minute experience for your group of up to 6 people.
You will need to purchase individual daytime admission tickets if you wish to stay on the farm after your encounter.

Our animal sponsorship is a great way to support the Farm. We have 3 different levels of sponsorship available for a selection of our animals which is valid for a year from purchase.
Each animal sponsorship comes with its own certificate and you also get the opportunity to visit us here at the Farm.
